Summer GAEL Conference July 12-15, 2009
The traditional highlight of the summer vacation--the GAEL Summer Conference--is set for July 12-15, 2009, at Jekyll Island. The Conference has been a tradition for GAEL and GASSP members since GAEL's beginning in 1974. Many education families have great fond memories of the Summer Conference and children's enrollment in the 4-H Summer of Fun programs. This summer promises some super highlights. Dr. Mark Wilson, the NASSP High School Principal of the Year, will kick off the conference that also include internationally known Dr. Bill Daggett as well as traditional summer regulars State Superintendent Kathy Cox and lawyer extraordinaire Phil Hartley. Summer 2009 marks the end of some famous Jekyll Island traditions. Immediately after the GAEL Summer Conference the Conference Center and the shopping center across the street will be razed to make way for a new conference center--Marriott Hotel complex that will amaze and impress everyone. The Summer 2010 Summer Conference will be held on Jekyll Island but with some interesting and novel additions. Stay tuned to this website and the GAEL Website for details.

GASSP Executive Committee Strategic Planning The GASSP Executive Committee--the officers of the Association, undertook a new activity June 7-9, 2009, at the Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris. Led by Dr. Pat Stokes, retired superintendent of the Morgan County Schools, the leadership group went through an extensive and intensive self-analysis and planning that will provide a direction for GASSP for the next three years. The results of the Strategic Planning event will be shared with the Board of Directors at their meeting at Summer GAEL. Dr. Bill Kruskamp, principal at Creekland Middle School and GASSP Middle School Member-at-Large, said of the event and the plan, "It not only "looks good" but it makes us accountable and forward-looking as a professional organization representing middle level and high school leaders." Also present for the planning event were: GASSP President Dr. Jim Arnold, President-Elect Dr. Alan Long, Second Vice President Dr. Mark Wilson, Secretary-Treasurer Randy Yonz, High School Coordinator Ken Goseer, Middle School Coordinator Dr. Melinda Dennis, Senior Advisors Dr. Molly Howard and Dr. Jimmy Stokes, and Past-President Dr. Steve Hankla.
