GASSP ANNOUNCES FINALISTS

PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR

GASSP is proud to announce the finalists for Principal of the Year. Selected as finalists for Middle School Principal of the Year are: Laurie Barron, Smokey Road Middle School, Newnan (Coweta County); Russell Brock, Loganville Middle School, Loganville (Walton County); and Chuck Lundy, Clifton Ridge Middle School, Gray (Jones County) .

High School Principal of the Year finalists are: Banks Bitterman, Buford High School, Buford (Buford City); Kevin Dowling, Lee County High School, Leesburg (Lee County); and Rusty Sowell, Heard County High School, Franklin (Heard County).

All finalists will undergo interviews on Saturday, February 4, and the Principals of the Year will be announced shortly after the interview process is completed. Congratulations to all of the finalists.

2012 GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONVENES ON JANUARY 9

The 2012 version of the Georgia General Assembly convened on Monday, January 9. The session promises to provide a number of issues for Georgia educators. One of the major issues will be the attempt by some legislators to revive the State Charter School Commission which was declared unconstitutional by the Georgia Supreme Court in May of 2011. Finances continue to be a concern. Governor Deal has promised to return the 10 days to the Pre K calendar that was cut last year. Many educators and support groups are pushing for the elimination of furlough days for teachers during FY2013.

The major fireworks for the session will more than center on ethics, tax reform, and revenue distribution. GASSP will continue to provide up-to-date information on the 2012 General Assembly through its weekly Legislative Update which is sent to all GASSP members.
